HIstoric Houses

Kamusha By Fred

Bulawayo Heritage Furniture stands as a testament to the enduring value of craftsmanship, history, and imagination – and to the belief that what once was can, with care and creativity, become something even greater.

Mission

Our mission is to rescue used and beautiful materials from old houses and give them a new purpose. We carefully salvage beams, floors, windows, ceilings, and fittings from historic homes slated for renovation or demolition. These pieces of the past are then transformed into handcrafted furniture that celebrates their origins while serving the needs of modern living. In doing so, we preserve not just the physical materials, but the stories embedded in them – stories of Bulawayo’s growth, of the people who built and lived in these homes, and of a city that has always adapted and evolved.

Bulawayo Heritage Furniture was born out of a deep love for history, craftsmanship, and the city we call home. Bulawayo, founded in the late 19th century as the royal capital of the Ndebele Kingdom under King Lobengula, soon became a vital colonial settlement and a centre of trade, architecture, and culture in southern Africa. The houses built here from the 1890s onward tell stories of ambition and adversity, of change and continuity. Built with imported Oregon pine, hand-forged iron, pressed-metal ceilings, and local stone, they reflect both European influence and African resilience. Over time, many of these once-grand homes have fallen into disrepair or been demolished – but the materials they were built from remain as strong and beautiful as ever.

The inspiration for this work is deeply personal. After years of walking through Bulawayo’s historic suburbs and seeing so many beautiful old houses stripped and forgotten, I felt called to do something different – to honour what they once were by reimagining what they could become. Each plank of wood I handle, each ceiling panel I restore, is a connection to those who came before us. By shaping them into new forms, I aim to carry their legacy forward.

What we are trying to achieve is more than just a furniture business. It is a movement toward sustainability, heritage preservation, and storytelling through design. We want every piece we make to be more than functional – we want it to spark curiosity, to inspire conversation, and to remind people that history lives on in the things we choose to keep and cherish. Our work proves that beauty does not have to come from new materials. It can be reclaimed, revived, and reinvented.

Our mission is simple yet profound: to transform the forgotten into the unforgettable. By turning reclaimed materials into timeless furniture, we preserve Bulawayo’s architectural heritage and create functional art that honours the past while enriching the present.

The idea of purchasing furniture made from wood salvaged from old, beautiful homes in the suburbs of Bulawayo is very appealing. Owning a piece of art made from an old, loved home is a talking point.

Preserving Heritage Homes. Together

Just Fred

We believe that every beam and board, every pressed-metal panel and iron fitting, deserves another life – and that by giving it one, we build a bridge between yesterday and tomorrow.
